The "built-in protection" for Bali homes is that there is no woodwork in contact with the ground or even close to it. Wooden poles, for example, are usually based on brick/concrete stumps. For the termites to get at door or window frames, they have to build their clay tunnels up an external wall - pretty obvious - you see it and destroy it. Sometimes I have seen them coming up between tiles inside the houe and builing what looks like stalacmites. In Australia, particularly with older houses, they may build these tunnels in the under-floor space where no-one is watching. In a small Kaliasem house we use, the termites are actively building these clay tunnels and we knock them down. But in a nearby house which was empty for a while - they did get some door frames. (Narrow spaces between a wall and a fence - like too narrow for humans to go - could be a hazard.) But, mostly keeping watch may be enough - and I think many houses get by OK without using chemicals.

I'm really intrigued with the development of the house. is it halfway done yet? I observed there are a lot of coconut trees and it's quite dangerous for the house.

My question was really prophylactic in nature - what's the old saying " an ounce of prevention is worth...." I have used a highly poisonous substance from one of those German chemical companies to treat all my roofing wood. The windows and doors are all made from Mirbau which is naturally resistant to the little buggers - too hard for them to bite through. So I reckon it's covered so thanks for all the good advice and comments.

Why are coconut trees dangerous? Bit more than half way I hope - plan is it should be finished end of April - plan is.... Another good saying "life is what happens between your plans". We will see.
