    Default New PLN connection troubles

    Hi All,
Building a small house in Berawa, Canggu, need around 5.5KW. My contractor claims that PLN does not have enough capacity in my area. I have no way of knowing if this is true, but there are 2 transformers within 200m from my door. Of course there is a solution: install a new 100k VA transformer at a cost of Rp 170 mln... Nice...

    Anybody with any advice?

    Peter

I won't be living in Bali for another 3 months so I don't know anything about power yet. I just thought I'd mention what may be a very offbeat idea. Is solar an option? I have seen that there are at least 2 solar shops on the island. They probably mainly do solar hot water but perhaps they can also provide solar panels for electricity.

Well the best thing to do is to go to the PLN office yourself or if you don't speak the language with someone you can trust and ask them, just to be sure.
Trust a contractor....  I don't think so

Electricity wise: 2200-3500-4400-5500 this is what you can apply for.
Maybe you can get away with 4400
The higher you go the higher are the standing charges.
    AWAY from prepaid meters

Regarding solar panel it is an option and they do have panels for electricity but you have to pay quite a lot of money and it will take you a few years to get your money back.

To achieve a supply of 6kW would cost you approximately $150,000 US for the full panelling and systems - sound like an option? I think not yet...

Go to PLN yourself with a fluent friend. Again and again and again - they have time and they think you don't....

I think he is telling you the truth as production of electricity thoughout Indonesia is insufficient but check anyway. 5.5 Kw is quite a lot so unless you intend to have a lot of AC's you could manage with less.

2 Ac plus lights, water pump, fridge freezer would need about 3.5 kw but be carefull and switch of an ac if you are boiling a kettle or ironing.

Thanks. Solar panels are not an option yet because you need enormous battery banks for nighttime electric power.

Jimbo, Sure there is a general lack of capacity, but how could my purchase of a transformer ease that. We did ask if less than 5.5Kw would be possible. No, not even 1.3Kw...

Now considering using two alternating LPG gensets.

Peter, I have just built 3 houses in Brawa. Don't believe the contractor. Besides, usually using a contractor in a problem in itself. There is no problem getting power supplied in Brawa. Like the others said, go straight to the PLN.

Use gas to boil the kettle. Buy appliances like irons here, they use less power (so take a bit longer to heat) than ones you may bring with you.

Find out by asking/checking around your area if there is house/villa that not being used or rarely occupied or having over capacity of what they need/used (PLN peoples must know which house with this criteria from their monthly bills), if you found 1 empty house then you can approach PLN (use your local good friend to do it) to give the unused or over capacity power for your house. PLN will prefer to give more power who efficiently use it, than to an empty house who only pay the fixed monthly cost (and mostly late in payment). We did this way in few places around Bali on the last 2 years (even in the busy location like seminyak)...Good Luck
