Default Money transfer to Bali 2nd edition

Hi, experts, its us again - waterdogs.
Booking completed - 14th of december take of for Bali - 1 month - finding property

Have read the threat "Bank/Money transfers to Bali" from Markit.

So far so good, Commonwealth is good -- Barcleys is bad !

    So, here my ultimative questions:

    BANK
    - Can I open a bank account in Indonesia when i'm "only" social visa?

    - Would you recomend to move money first on my own bank account in bali, than move it to
    the seller?

    - As i learned: No taxes if I transfer Money from Germany to Bali?!

    - Any advantage in moving money from USA to Bali, instead Germany? (Have also an account here)

    - Any advantage to use a German Bank in Indonesia, as my bank account (if I can open one)?
Deutsche Bank, in this case! Im not a banker, but maybe it than arrives as Euro in Indonesia, and can convert it while pick up?

    VISA
    - I booked 31 days instead of 30 (should learn to count  ) you guys think we will get problems? Thought to mention it at the immigration or is that stupid?

    Greetings Waterdogs.... :?

Although I have done so in the past, it seems the official answer is no and when I have opened accounts more recently I have had to provide my KITAS.

You can pay an overstay fee on departure was $20 per day last I heard.

It is an offence for any airline to let you travel without a valid visa (including the correct number of days) so you probably won't be able board the plane let alone get through customs at the other end. Either change your flights or go and get a 60 day visa and save yourself a lot of hassle.

I know many people who have overstayed, including myself.

In fact my ticket always had a return date of a year later and it was never an issue.

I have never heard of anyone being refused to board the plane because their return date is beyond the date of the visa.

Officially(following the law), no you can't open an account.

Depends a little on what you're going to buy (land and then build yourself or a house), most agents have escrow accounts..you can transfer the money due into that account and from there it goes to all parties involved. Some notaries do the same, when aquiring land you can transfer money into their account and from there it will be transfered to all parties involved.

depends on amount you wanna transfer and current conversionrates. Oh yeah..no taxes, since you can't tranfer into your own account overhere.

    friendly greetings...gilbert.
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)

If you have never lived here before, I would suggest renting a place for at least 6 months before deciding on buying property here. I think you can save money doing this and find the best property for your needs.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.

Thanks mimpimanis! I wrote an e-mail to the embassy in san francisco, lets see whats their opinion on it. Did you get any odd stamp into your passport, due to overstay?

Scharfes Huhn: Thanks for your advise, and you are absolutley correct. We are both not yet retiered, so unfortunatly we can't effort (timewise) to stay there a longer period to search around. I lived in Jakarta 10 years ago, but don't know the process of buying property, thats why I'm posting. Btw. Money transfer would be another informative chapter for your document "Live and make money in Bali". It's a good script...

Gilbert - your answers are always very helpful - thanks! Will check with Deutsche Bank, what they say... Your official NO, means: Yes just go a do it, and don't ask to much!? :D

Udayana - 10 years ago, when I flow into Indonesia my first time, I also had a returnticket in 1 year. What the airline did, was giving me a "fake" ticket (for free), which i could show at the immigration. Based on your post, you brought me to the idea to just call the airline - see what they say.

Thanks to all of you ...

Alot of the procedures to do with air travel have become stricter post 9/11. Also depends on the airline. A couple of years ago my wife and I were forced by Jetstar to change our return date before they would let us board. Same situation as you - I had booked for 32 days and didn't have a visa (very busy with work and completely forgot). Luckily in our case there were seats available and to change the return date was free because the plane was delayed overnight due to fog so they waived the fee. Otherwise it would have been an extra $800.

I would email them and get something in writing. You don't want to be standing at check-in arguing that you were told something on the phone. Then there is the problem of voa at the other end. You might be hit up for a few hundred dollars. It's happened before.

Actually Barclays was just fine once they had found out which was the sister/correspondent bank of my Bank here in Indonesia - that wasn't really Barclays fault (they would say that) but the second time I transferred it went through a dream.

Can you open a bank account? Yes, you can, get your nominee to open a bank account in his name and give you the checkbook, and ATM card (and the pin number too of course  ). At first I was a little cautious but then I though I I'm gonna trust the guy with my property (which you ultimately will do) then why choke at a simple bank account?

Up to you but that's the "simple" way - I have heard from reliable sources that you personally can open a bank account at the Pembantan (sp?) Banks, sorry the local banks with the green signs.

First find a property, then organize your notary then discuss the total costs with said notary - really talk TOTAL costs with him - all extras, etc, etc. Once that is all clear then and only then transfer to your account or to the escrow account of the notary - but watch him like a hawk :x

When you get that far you might want to ask your seller if he would maybe prefer the sale to take place in dollars in the USA? For a consideration for you, of course... 8)

You can actually have dollar or Euro accounts here in Indo but that won't do you much good at the moment with the dollar and Euro dropping (or Rup rising, never sure which it is)

I know its all a bit scary but if you are awake and honest you will do just fine. Viel Gluck und Mute
