    Default Living in Sanur??

We are an expatriate family on the move again and we will be moving to Bali this time next year. Anyone with kids at BIS, do you think living in Sanur is our only choice? Whats the traffic like? don't really want the kids stuck in traffic for hours. We are going on a look see trip this summer and will have a chance to look around more, but would be good to have an idea of where to start. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi Leones, Welcome to the forum. So I am guessing that you want to live within 30 min drive of the BIS which is somewhere in Sanur (I don't know exactly where). If you go west of Sanur into Denpasar you may hit heavy traffic - also if you go south along the By-Pass road you may also get heavy traffic in the Kuta area. So I suggest you look in Sanur, and also look north-east along the coast. Don't go further than 15 Km. The map below from Google Earth has Sanur at the bottom left, and the top-right is about 13 Km away. (Click it for detail.)

BIS is located just off Jl Danau Buyan, a street opposite Jl Danua Tamblingan (the main drag), about 100 - 200 meters from the By-pass, in Sanur village. There is hardly any traffic problem there, just heavy traffic on the By-pass. In the back of Jl Danua Tamblingan, there are usually many nice houses for rent (a little expensive, because of the location).
    Keep on smiling.

One important thing to watch out for before signing a lease is how close the house is to the nearest Karaoke bar, Disco, local "music cafe", etc.

Many of these places have poor, or no proper sound-proofing. This is not obvious when you're looking at a seemingly nice house. If you're unlucky, you could find the noise unbearable late at night and into the early hours of the morning. I know this because I fell foul in a Sanur house in Jalan Sekuta. Couldn't sleep properly for 10 months. All attempts at complaining to the local banjar, the kepala desa, even the bar in question, fell on deaf ears (no pun intended).

Immediate Western neighbours, five metres across the road, (an American and an Australian), had the same problem and eventually packed up and moved. Various Balinese neighbours hate the situation, too, and have been putting up with it for 10 years! I really don't know why, unless it's got to do with fear of reprisals if they complain (maybe the bar owner has "powerful connections").

My "solution" was to move, too, which I've just done. After several years of living in Sanur, we moved to Sidakarya (about 5kms south of Sanur). Two things have struck us here...the rents are considerably cheaper and the people are generally much more friendly, (less stuck-up).

I still think Sanur is a great place to live, so long as you're well away from any noise pollution.

One other thing to be wary of, again not immediately apparent, is how flood-prone the house location is. There are places just behind Jalan Danau Tamblingan, for example, that flood badly. A close friend of mine rented a large, expensive house in Jalan Bumi Ayu. He woke up one morning to find his bedroom under a metre and a half of flood water, with quite large fish swimming around!

Despite what some locals may tell you if you ask them directly, it can be prudent to check out a location in the middle of the night for unwanted noise. Some places are only problematic at weekends, others every night of the week.

Sound can travel very long distances. The worst part is low frequencies, (bass), because what you hear is an endless thump-thump-thump. Maybe until 3 or 4am!

    :D

Gave me a bit of a laugh this as Jalan Danau is Lake Street and Jalan Bumi Ayu is Earth/world Shark Street. Sort of self descriptive really :D

    Unhappy Living in Sanur

Hi.....I was about to rent a house in Sekuta because it is cheaper than beach side. When I was searching Sekuta in Google I hit this site. May I know where is the Karaoke bar? Does it affect all Sekuta houses? Need your info urgently.

No, not all, but quite a few. Depends upon which part of Jl Sekuta you're looking at.

Send me a PM about the house you're about to rent.

I hope, for your sake, it's not the one I had to escape from, or the one across the road.

The noisy Karaoke bar that's a big problem is actually on the the By-Pass Road. Very close to properties on the middle part of Jl Sekuta, as a fruit bat flies. (And incessant bass notes from what the DJs think is music, cranked up).

The name of the bar is Katu Lebo.

Before renting a property in areas like that, you should go there in the middle of the night (and later) and hear for yourself (if possible).
And BTW - the areas most affected by noise around there are also flood-prone.
