Default Family thinking of a Long Stay in Bali. General Questions!

    Hello
We are a British/Dutch family living in Holland with a five month old and an almost 2 year old. We are thinking of spending a year or so in Bali and are researching the various necessities such as visas and locations etc of our plan. By the time we get it together it wil probably be October 2010 or later although we are wondering if it's better to leave it later still so the kids can at least have a year at school etc. Do any of you have experience with Pre-Schools etc over on Bali? I see that the Green School has a Pre K which starts at 3 years old. Are there any others which start earlier by way of social/creative stimulus for young children? Also, I don't yet know much about our visa options and how much red tape and expense we are likely to get caught up in. Is it necessary to spend a month or so in Bali prior to our planned longer trip in order to get things organised and make connections? It's kind of pricey to come for a short period and in some ways I'd rather just take the leap and figure things out when we get there. I'm an experienced traveller and feel up for the adventure! We're happy to live simply and don't need Western restaurants etc although a good house with internet would be an expense worth making for me. Where does one start with finding accomodation? Is it best to book something for a few weeks and then find a longer option when one gets there? Is anyone able to point me in the right direction with any useful links for visa agents/accomodation/preschool etc?

Further, what do you think is a comfortable amount to live on (living simply on local fare but being able to take a trip or have a fancy meal once in a month or so). Our insurances are already taken care of so we don't need to factor that in, just basic living costs and I'll add visa runs etc if I find out that such will be necessary.

Many thanks in advance for your help!
Apologies for multiple questions on one post!

There was a thread not so long about pre-schools in Bali.

For visas you will probably need to look at social visas for the family. The visa has a maximum stay of six months, so you will need to leave Bali at least once to get another one.

It's much better to come here and then look at housing. The best option would be to travel around Bali a bit and get a feel for where you want to be based. You can get a much better deal on housing the more contacts you have.

And finally welcome to the forum!

My son goes to Children's House in Jimabran, a Montesorri school. http://www.balichildrenshouse.com/

Starter class is from 18 months and is for 3 or 5 days a week 2.5 hours a day. For the older children it is 3 hours a day / 5 days a week. My son loves it there and is missing school now in the Christmas holidays. (He is 3 now).

I am never quite sure why Sosbud visa's are given as advice. Unless you know someone it is not so easy to get such a visa.

Nor is staying for one year without a suitable visa as at the very least you will have to take the whole family out of the country and re-enter at least once.

My suggestion is to go to your local Indonesian Embassy and tell them what you want to do and the reason for doing it. Please remember the chances of getting a work visa are almost nil.

Otherwise you may well have to come for a shorter time and try and find someone who will sponsor you for a sosbud visa.

I would also suggest you use the search functions to see answers to many of the questions you may have that have been asked before.
    Regards Jimbo

Thanks for the children's house tip. I'll check it out. Will also look into the search functions of the site.

    Many thanks!
