Default Monkey and kitten at Ubud

    Hi all.
I browse the forum constantly, but don't always have much to contribute. I visit Bali often and have been twice this year so far. Last week, I went to Ubub to have a drink at the pub and view the monkeys in the car park. My friends and I witnessed the most amazing site I have ever seen. We were looking at the monkeys on the wall, stubbie in hand, when we heard a kitten crying. Looking up, we saw a monkey pulling a kitten (about six months old) by the tail towards her. I thought oh oh, here's dinner. To our amazement, the monkey started fleaing the kitten and cuddling it. She let it walk a little then kept bringing it back to her. The kitten started nuzzling the monkeys teat and the monkey was stroking the kitten. A Bali dog climbed a tree onto the wall, and I was thinking this is it. To my surprise, the female monkey pulled the kitten into her arms and turned her back to the dog. A large (presumably) male monkey walked in front of the female with kitten and turned his back to the family to face the dog. The dog ran off. I have been so warmed by this citing and tell all who will listen. I've never seen anything like it. And I have pictures to prove it, as do my mates.

    Hi sooze,

great story indeed, funny how things sometimes work in Nature.
Would love to see some pics of that amazing experience. Not because I dont believe it, but just to be able to have seen what you have seen.
    Thanks for making my day.....

Just visiting after quite a long time away and found this thread.

Monkeys and kittens must get along quite well...I remember on our first visit to Gede's Homestay over at Arnturan Village the neighbours had a pet baby monkey. One morning while we were having breakfast a little kitten ran across the beach in front of us being chased by a baby monkey. I thought the kitten was in trouble but then it hid behind a bush then jumped out on top of the monkey, running away with it's back and tail arched. Then it turned around and chased the monkey...this went on for quite some time all through the gardens and onto the beach.

I was busy taking photos and then the game became weird...the little monkey would grab the kitten and start to perform the "motions". He was a bit confused because it didn't matter where is was holding the kitten (head or tail) he just kept "pumping" the kitten. He wasn't actually doing anything but the motions were being made and his little eyebrows would bob up and down in time...an absolute scream!

I won't publish pictures so as not to offend; but it was absolutely hilarious and was not the only time we witnessed this going on during our visit. The monkey also tried it on with the other neighbour's puppy, but he wasn't at all impressed!! A confused little monkey!

On our next visit the kitten, puppy and monkey had both grown up and wouldn't have anything to do with each other.

We've kissed the "rat race" goodbye...but not quite made it to a home in Bali
