    Default The Milky Way

I "discovered" by accident that there is so little light pollution where I live, that you can easily spot the Galactic Core of the Milky Way Galaxy at night.

I will soon find a spot where I can have a 180 degree view, or something with a nicer background.

(From Flickr)...Never thought I could see the Milky Way Galaxy over my garden. 20 secs at ISO 6400.
A nice try, Bert, (but the leaves are too "brutal").

Looking at your image, the stars look to be in pin-point focus. I would have thought that during 20 seconds of exposure, some blurring should have occurred. Any cheap second-hand Canon EOS's for sale up your way?

This is The International Year of Astronomy. It's great to see that at least one person in Bali is taking the trouble to look up at the sky and even attempting to take pictures of it.

I know the area where you live. Going further East or West from there, I'm sure you'll find a location with a better view. Or even go up the hills a bit.

    :D

Of course the leaves are over exposed.

Even with 20 seconds there is some blurring, 10-15 is sort of ok.

I am just amazed at looking up, now that I have "discovered" the Milky way. And of course there are plenty of places in Bali where it would be much nicer to see than from my house.

Yes, we have 4 EOS's at the moment in here, 350D, 40D, 5D and 5D MkII

But I can't advertise here

Somebody very close to me, (a mutual friend of ours), has caught the HDR bug.

We have one of those "toy" digital cameras. Available "Bracketing" is +/- 0.5 stops. Not much "real" dynamic range to start with. Better than nothing.

Apart from the limited bracketing we have at our disposal, we're having lots of fun with single shot faux (fake) bracketing. It's amazing the results you can get with even that.

Any chance of borrowing one of your old Canon's for a while?

We're moving to a new house this week. All packed and ready to go. No time to upload our HDR shots, yet. Hope we can establish a new internet connection when we get there, without too much hassle.

    :D

No, no chance in borrowing any Canon's.

    Oh yes HDR.

I know even two mutual friends of ours who... :D

Even "toy" camera's can make interesting pictures.

And if it has a manual setting, you can always under and overexpose ...

Yes, good photo, and you do get some clear views of the night sky. Needs to be a no-cloud/no-moon night which is not all the time. Recently there was a power blackout on a clear night and the sky seemed even more dramatic.

    Isn't it amazing?

I was totally flabbergasted when I saw it for the first time...

I live here 7 years + but, I never imagined I could see something like this. I did see stars. Of course. But the Galactic Core of the Milky Way? Huh?

You can even see it with your bare eyes.... First I thought it was clouds....
