Honestly, I really don't get what she means about telephone exchanges.

The closer you live to a telephone exchange - generally the better adsl connection you have.
I wondered where they were as that may factor as to where I choose to stay - I REALLY need a 1mb connection that is a 1mb!

Yes this is true - if you are within 8-10 Km of the Exchange your chances are better. But the question is still a bit odd because there are so many and you give no hints about where you are looking. I know where the Exchanges of Lovina and Singaraja are - will that help?

To be honest, I am quite flexible. I would prefer Sanur but am happy to look anywhere.
Ideally it would be nice to be near some restaurants and walking distance to the sea.
    Thanks

OK, then when you are looking at properties, check if the have a phone line already - because if there isn't a line, it is fairly hard to get one. If there is a phone line, then ask about what exchange it is connected to and how far away it is. Finally, check if Telkom Speedy service (which is their label for ADSL) is available from that exchange (exchanges with old equipment canot offer ADSL services).T

Not sure how accurate my little bit of info is, but I was told that if your number starts with "7" or "8" Telkom Speedy can be supplied to that line
