    Default Wages costs

    Hi guys,
We are a while off moving to Bali for the longer term but I have been writing a move plan with much help from this forum.

I would like your comments about the "staff" you may have. How much you are paying your cooks, pembantus, pool boys, drivers and anyone else you think worth mentioning.

I have looked back on this board and I saw an old comment about Rp300k per month for a pembantu. For some reason I can change the order of the board from "descending" to "ascending" but I cant get the page to change to page 2, 3 etc so forgive me if post No.21 is exactly about this topic - for some reason I cant get there.

Anyhoo, thanks for reading and for any info.

    Cheers

    AndrewD

True - but employers don't worry about this too much so many are paid lower rates - Rp500,000 per month and maybe even less.

But then, the Rp830,000 rate is just over Rp30,000 a day, and a whole family may be living off this - so if you drive a hard bargain for lower rates - maybe you will not sleep so well.

Thank you gentlemen. i thought the old figures would be out of date. Rp839000 is roughly $A100 at todays rate on XE.com so, even if you dont negotiate a cheaper rate, thats not much for a persons labours.

    Cheers

You should pay the going rate rather than what you consider is cheap.

    Totally agree with you Jimbo.

I get really annoyed at some places paying under the award and yet are making huge profits....not really fair as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe if there were some sort of government department that could impose heavy fines to employers who don't pay the correct wage a lot of employees could maybe enjoy a little bit extra food or comfort.

When I have spoken to a lot of my friends here about the salary not being updated they tell me they are too 'scary' to say anything to the boss......this is totally wrong as far as I'm concerned.

Could someone please clarify for me what these figures mean? Is this for someone working for an 8 hour day 7 days a week except for ceremonies. It seems like a meaningless figure given that some people work much harder than others at a particular job and others work much longer hours.
An example of what I'm asking is this. My Bahasa Indonesia teacher works for a couple as a pembantu every morning for a couple of hours. I think she fixes breakfast and perhaps does some light cleaning, not really sure. How would one determine a fair payment for a situation such as this?

I think the Rp800,000 is for a full-time job. The morning pembantu would have time for an afternoon job as well - so maybe you count it as half a job.

At the moment, the "going" rate for an employee in the Badung area (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Canggu) for a full time job, (7 hours a day, 6 days a week... say in a shop, hotel, restaurant, etc) is between Rp1 million and Rp1.2 million per month, depending on experience.
Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.
