We're thinking of moving to Bali for a year or so and are wondering....
Visa runs and insurances aside, what is the cost of fairly simple living? We're 2 young kids (pre school), 2 adults, living a simple life, perhaps somewhere in between local and expat life (nice house with internet but no fancy restaurants or clubs?). Would a range of 1200 - 1700 euros a month be enough? We would like to hang around at home and the beach and make a couple of trips around Bali. Any guidelines at to costs of such a life would be gladly received.

The figures you have quoted are probably adequate. The cost of living and in particular housing costs vary quite a bit. The north of Bali is much cheaper than the south for example.
Internet is relatively expensive also and then you need to think about transport.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
