Default Questions about opening a bar???????

I was toying with the idea of opening up a drinking establishment and was wondering if anyone had some useful info for me. Anything would help.

    1) To legally open a business, do I need a working visa or something other than that? Cost of work visa?

    2) Any idea of what it would cost to open up a small bar, no food or kitchen or anything? As far as the cost of liquor license, ceremony for blessings, rent, etc??

    3) I would be interested in importing some beers from America. Is this financially feasible? Or would customs tax me so much on it that I would have to sell each beer for way too much? Is it even legal to import beer and liquor from outside Bali?

Thats it for now. I will post more questions as they come to mind. Thanks for the advice!!

I don't know about your first 2 questions, but I know that I bought a small can of Budweiser at a grocery store for about rp 25,000, because I hadn't drank a Budweiser in so long. In hindsight, it wasn't worth it, and given that most people in Bali are tourists, if they want an American beer, most likely they have it back in their own country, and they just enjoy the Bintangs while in Bali. I don't think it would be financially wise to import many foreign beers, but that's just my opinion.

As I know you cannot import any alcoholics. There is only one company (state owned) in Jakarta which has a licence for importing alcoholics. This company covers all Indonesia including Bali. Nobody else can do it (legal).
And the Budweiser is really not worth to be imported for expansive money :-) :-).

BTW if you stay here longer you will see the opening and closing and changing of bars in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak area at least monthly, weekly, daily. So nobody will get rich here by opening a bar - in my opinion. Maybe only the balinese estate owners and their laywers and notaries .

    hai skunksounds...
legally as in having an establishment in your own name, you would have to set up an PMA also provides you a working-permit....in my opinion costly for just 1 bar.
We are talking about a normal bar here right? not a balinese 'kafe', cause that are 2 different things...
For a bar, location is almost everything, so you would be stuck in taking over a bar since the hotspots are taken. the good thing about taking over a bar, you also take over the existing licenses. rent, depending on location...ceremony for blessing, is the least of your worries or financial costs.
Importing beers and such...forget it, just use a 'local' distrubutor and use his connections if you want to sell foreign booze.
You forgot about staff...bartender/waitress/doorman,bouncer(security). and for a balinese kafe, just add some girls from Java  .

It's a bit harsh, but Wepro and Jimbo do have point with their post skunksound. I wouldn't dare trying to start a Bar....a Kafe maybe, .

@noodles, Bintang is Heineken with a different label  .
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)

There are quite a few bars around where an expat is a player. Usually there is an Indonesian partner so the expat is not "working" but just "investing" in a business that employs locals. Some appear profitable - while others would seem borderline.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will take some serious time to think this through, as well as doing some research in Seminyak and trying to find some expat/bar owners to seek any advice from them.

But just for the record, Budweiser would be the last thing I would dream of importing. I could just pee in a bottle, slap a Bud label on there, and I doubt anyone could tell the difference :D I know I couldn't, and I am quite the experienced beer drinker.

Yes, advance market evaluate or survey and report had to be required that before you make decision. Seminyak area is better for wine biz. But compare JKT and Bali, easy to earn money fm JKT abt wine biz 8)
