Exclamation Working in Bali on a Social Visa - some considerations

Was talking to someone in the know about Bule working in Bali and some of the problems involved when he pointed out a further problem that I hadn't even considered and I'm betting many of you out there hadn't either.

Lots have asked about working here on a social visa and have been generally advised that it's hard to impossible and will get you thrown out of Indonesia for your troubles.

Well my friend pointed out that it aint quite that simple: first the Imagrazzi will throw your raggedy ass in jail for just as long as they can keep you - guess, it's a nice little earner there for the guards and other officials. That's not the worst of it though because you will eventually be let go after they have squeezed as much out of you as they can.

The real pisser is that they will also lock up your sponsor! And that will not be so much fun I'm told.

So all you out there hoping to work or look for it on Bali please tell your sponsor to get used to jail food (or lack there of)

I know two foreigners who were thrown out for working in the bar they owned. No jail time.

I have been advising for years the same thing and also with a business visa but many times it fell on deaf ears.

i know 3 bules working on 30 day tourist visas for the biggest oil company in Indonesia, which is run by the government. Plenty more here working on busines visas. Not at all saying its right, just that when the govt is too tightarsed to follow its own rules it will blatently break them. Certainly dont want to get on the wrong side of them while they got u in this situation tho.

I suspect they paid up quickly to avoid the pain?

No. As far as I am told by their family still here they were given notice to leave. And they left straight away knowing that they had been working and were in the wrong.
