I find it interesting that some members are not taking the swine flu seriously. The WHO certainly are, and as previously stated by Aquaman, by the aussie govt as well.
My wife, child and mother in law are all flying to JKT on sunday and i will follow in 2 weeks. I am concerned for them, and as we will also be in Bali for a couple of weeks, will keep an eye on whats happening. Facemasks? not sure yet, but this flu is spreading very fast.

But what can we do? We cannot control whether this flu will become common in the area where we live. If it does, then there are a few things we can do to limit our exposure - facemasks being the very visible option, another option being to stay at home more.

Hi Ron, sure, stay at home if having flu symptoms is what is being advised here, and it appears hospitals are stocking up on Tamiflu and some other medication that escapes me right now
Out your way near Lovina, shouldnt be hard to avoid it.

Yep i understand you would be worried and make sure they have hospital insurance and alike but according to some doc on the telly those masks would not stop things like flu so dont count on having a mask as your protection.Nearly everytime i go to asia i get sick sometimes flu sometimes belly ache so i think some people going to asia at the moment will get the usual sickness but will panic because of the publicity this flu is getting, having said that im your cynical type mainly because there is so much shite in the news these days people have become media lemmings ! There will be alot of research type out there living off the government gravy train ( our hard earned taxes ) and this is a good opportunity for them to get extra funding, the dust mask industry will be making a motza, airport taxes will rise ,medical insurance premiums will rise, local tourism will prosper due to people who decide its to risky to go oversea's,drug companies will make extra billions, schools will close and kids will be happy, newspaper presses will be running hot & and the telly will be drowning us night after night after night after night until we are driven mad

    Swine Flu vs SARS

Currently no international travel restrictions have been announced and the most recent WHO update indicated no reported deaths (although recent press reports suggest a death toll of over 100 in Mexico).

SARS resulted in severe disruption to the international travel. Travel fell 50.8% during its worst month of May 2003 in the Asian region. Given the acute and short-term impact of the disease, Australian international passenger traffic followed a classic Vshaped pattern, falling 17.2% at its lowest point in May 2003 before recovering to a position of growth four months later.

Does Pandemic stand for Pandimoniom and endemic. Like all things the news media blows things out of all proportion. Apart from in Mexico where there are 12 (confimed) deaths no where else has shown more than mild symptoms.

It is good to be prepared but I feel the media is spreading panic which will turn into Pandimonium. :(

This maybe so Jimbo, panic, pandimonium whatever. However, there is great concern from health organizations and govts all around the world. As i said in earlier post, the aussie govt is taking it particularly serious.
Further on face masks, i tried 5 chemist today, and all had sold out and didnt know when they could get further stocks. But... Abdullah, my local chemist had plenty @ $3 each :)

    Hi all,
Back in Milan and all calm throughout the flight/trip from Jakarta 3 days ago. Four months in Jakarta and Bali, had all the usuals. Fever, stomach upsets over and over, but took it all in stride(except the fever was terrible). Arriving here 3 days ago, had a stomachache again. Today all back to normal. Perhaps precaution is wise but not necessarily taking the medication imho.
    Ciao goldminer!
