If only it was so simple?
Careless disposal of plastic waste creates environmental pollution because plastic degrades very slowly.
To tackle this problem the Balinese community held an event called "Free of Plastic Waste” last Friday.
Supported by the Coca-Cola Company, the community cleaned up the Nusadua Beach area in Bali.
The general manager of Coca-Cola in the region addresses the issue.
[Sani Dwi Prasetya, General Manager, Coca-Cola, Balinusa]:
"Bali is ours, Bali belongs to the world and our children so let's keep this island free of garbage, not just for ourselves but for all those to come in the future."
Local communities at every beach in Bali also took part in the cleanup.
Organic and inorganic garbage is collected separately, with plastic waste being taken away for recycling.
It’s an effort that’s popular with the locals.
Made Wirata, Member, Bali Off-Road Club:
"Everyone should be concerned about the environment, put a stop to littering and choose between organic and inorganic waste for recycling."
Plastic bottles can take up to 1,000 years to naturally degrade.

It all starts with one simple step, pick up a plastic bottle and recycle![]()
Impossible. %97 of Indonesians don't give a dam about their environment.
Teachers need to educate the kids at an early age about recycling or else this country will continue to go down the toilet
The "Free of Plastic Waste" event is a good step towards teaching people that everyone is responsible for plastic rubbish. I don't understand denigrating the idea of making Bali a cleaner place because too many people aren't doing their part in cleaning up Bali. As Scout said, it begins by picking up one bottle or not throwing down one plastic bag. She wasn't saying it will happen overnight.
My Bali observations here - http://baliquest.wordpress.com/
I go into Ubud every Sunday morning about 5.30am with a group of people, many of whom are high profile locals in the town. And we put on our gloves and get into the drains and remove "rubbish" wether it's plastic or other stuff, eg: babies nappies, dead dogs etc we do it, and at the "end of the day" hopefully we are making a difference. We cannot "throw our hands up" and say its too hard.
Eco Bali have a great system with recycling: they deliver two separate bags to your house or business, one for plastic glass etc, the other for paper et al. Remove weekly and it is recycled.
Sorry guys, but this is not too hard.
Someone said it only takes one person to take up a challenge and we all follow suit.......or words to that effect no matter what that challenge may be.
See you all in Ubud with your rubber gloves and a smile!!!
good for you.

The money raised from the reycyling is used for school programmes. BKT the children are already being taught about recycling and the damage being done to their beautiful island by dumping waste inappropriately. This is a long long journey, but hopefully things will change in the future.
