Yeah, I've been by there a ton of times. I heard the quiz night is a lot of fun.
Ideally, I was looking for something with a more local flare and price.

Don't know about Ubud but I like to eat at a place in Petitenget that is pretty good and cheap. Think the road is called Jl Petitenget, it is at the 4-way stop light in the Petitenget area, just turn towards the beach and you can't miss the place on your right hand side. Sorry, I have forgotten the name, guess I have become pretty Indonesian with my direction giving skills.

Anyways a full rack of ribs, complete with sides and a free heineken as well as dessert runs you about rp 39,000. Can't beat that if you're in the area already.

Yea that's the place, been a few months since I have been...didn't know that they had accommodation either...

I just read different post regarding Nuri's clientele, and it was very funny. It certainly is a strange place with strange people. I love the ribs, but it is a little steep on my budget..

If you want to meet an assortment of expat wackos in the Ubud area and a few living legends, Nuri's is the place to go.

The ribs are OK, (overrated), and the rest of the menu is just so-so (and over-priced). I haven't been to a "tuna night" for years so can't comment.

My favourite Nuri things:

Meeting "strange people"
Draught beer (and drinking it with "strange people")
New York Brian and the legendary "Naughty Nuri"
The vodka martinis with a couple of olives
Talking seriously with "strange people" about nearly everything
The vodka martinis
People watching, especially art lovers going to the Neka Gallery across the road
That it hasn't changed much over the years (apart from the prices)
Martinis with vodka
No bullshit Balinese music playing when you're there (or any, for that matter)
Beer with olives...?

One thing I miss from its early days was the amazing painting of two tigers being "naughty".

Go there and take pot-luck, so to speak. Never feel intimidated if it appears to be "full". Sit with or join in with anybody, within reason. Redefine what "reason" means to you, if you think that's important.

If you're there at the right time, you will meet people who will either disgust you forever, or possibly change your life.

Don't forget it's also a depot for the Bali Hash House Harriers. You might even spot the inimitable Victor Mason who started it in Bali. If you have any spare time, join him in one of his famous Bali Bird Walks.
