Default Calling all muso's. Show us your wares!

I'm keen to chat with like-minded musicians, maybe form a collaboration with a vocalist, and make beautiful music together. With enough support, maybe Bert will give us members our own space.
I have done collaborations before with vocalists overseas using mp3 and by sending .wav files. It is quite an easy process, and you get to do it in your own time. No pressure! Nobody wants to stifle the creative process.... :)

A short tune entitled" Hammock swingin' ditty". Requires warm sunshine and mild breeze.

Does it need a gamelan to qualify in your opinion Bert?
Or can a musician just be inspired by their island surroundings?
I've spotted the Bali locals kicking back with a guitar and enjoying a moment in the sunshine too. Shame they used a guitar, not a traditional instrument and all that....
Frankly, I'm confused by your post.... It was my intention to see how BEF musicians are influenced by Bali, or their Indonesian experience.
Anyway, maybe it was a bad idea. You tell me.......

You are going to have to narrow that down for me Bert. That seems vague.
I was in Indonesia, inspired by my surroundings, when that tune came to me.
    That obviously doesn't qualify.
I don't know any Indonesian vocalists yet, I'd like to though, That would be the point of this topic, wouldn't it? Getting in contact with members that suit? swapping ideas, learning....
Anyway, if those are your rules chief, so be it. You've just shut me down, and answered my question. bad idea.
I plan to learn a traditional Indonesian instrument. I'm a keen percussionist too. I'll bring it up again later then, maybe.

    Hi mileage..

I don't think it's a bad idea at all, in principle. Getting "musical expats" to participate might be more difficult. I'm not sure.

On that note, (pun unintended), I don't know what's going on with your Hammock Swingin' Ditty mp3. I've "downloaded" it twice now to try and have a listen, but all I get is a php script file.
...I've spotted the Bali locals kicking back with a guitar and enjoying a moment in the sunshine too. Shame they used a guitar, not a traditional instrument and all that...
I'm not so sure that's a shame at all. What do you really expect Bali locals to do? Cart gamelan instruments around with them all the time so they can try to play Dewa, Superman Is Dead, Suicidal Sinatra, Sheila On 7, Ed Edy, etc, etc, songs in a kind of pentatonic scale?

The guitar is an extremely portable and versatile instrument. That's part of its appeal, especially amongst young people. Ever tried playing a rock chord on a gong? Ever tried to lift a gong, (one of the bigger ones)? Ever wondered why so many young people all around the world love their rock, pop, punk, heavy metal, reggae, etc, music and the artists performing it?

I can't quite imagine "gamelan rock" ever taking off, anywhere. Attempts I've heard so far at morphing traditional Balinese music with western genres just haven't worked, (at least for my ears).

Many years ago, there was a group called Guru Gypsy. "Guru" was actually a son of first Indonesian President Sukarno (Guru Putera Sukarno). He studied classical piano in the Netherlands and tried to fuse Western "classics" with traditional Indonesian musical forms, including Balinese. Well, there were some odd moments here and there, lots of plagiarized keyboard riffs from the likes of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Balinese roosters crowing in the background, silly suling (flute) parts, droning gongs, electric guitars...I think you get the picture.

It was such a weird total package I loved it, for a while, because of its weirdness. There was some good musicianship on it. By that, I mean there were musicians who could play their instruments competently. A pity about the derivative mish-mashed "compositions".

One of my favourite things about that experimental album was the liner notes for the cassette tape. It included a nice monochrome photo of Guru sitting at an expensive grand-piano, (maybe a Steinway), bare-foot, (his kicked-off thongs in the foreground).

And did I mention the times I played with the highly eccentric Leo Kristy? Kind of a folk-rock-traditional music melting pot fellow. Probably the less said the better.

    :D

Stoked you put some input in Sanurian!
Firstly, that comment about guitars was me being facetious. My Hammock swingin ditty, which Bert seems to think is not suitable, is an acoustic guitar piece. Hence my comment about it having to be a gamelan to suit his Bali/ Indonesian guidelines. Yes I have seen the size of those beasty instruments, I've even had a go on one. I couldn't tell you why the mp3 isn't working, it obviously worked for Bert. :|
Anyway mate, I look forward to catching up with you soon, and gas bagging about all things muso.
'Eccentric' is right up my alley, and I'm keen to hearing more about Leo Kristy, and your other exploits.
