    Default shipping to bali

Does anyone have any experience shipping things (surfboards, etc) to bali from USA?
Is a boat the cheapest method? A slow boat arriving a month or more later would be ok.
How long does it typically take to arrive?
    Suggestions, tips are greatly appreciated!

I'm also looking for the cheapest way to send some stuff to Bali (packed in cardboard boxes.. 1-2 cubic meters) from the EU. The ones i've found so far are all extremely expensive.

It's a long time since I shipped from UK, over 10 years but I found the best way was to air freight the boxes at that time. It wasn't possible to get a price to get them all the way to Bali by sea, only to Surabaya and air freight wasn't much more in cost.

I think there are still cheap or discounted service for air freight boxes. You might want to try to look online as there are a lot of promos for that service. USA have a lot of agency to do that for you I reckon.

I think the biggest problem you have here is not how cheap you can get the shipping but the huge taxes (bribes) you will need to pay to get them cleared at port. You will be at the mercy of the guys working the docks or airport customs and the money asked for is hefty. equal to or more than the cost of shipping in the first place

Indonesia is geared for export... selling their product... anything coming in is in trouble............especially if you're a Bulee... your very name on the Weighbill gets them excited at the prospect of what they can make from you

Doesnt matter what you declare the value at... they (experts that they are) determine the value themselves and ask for a large sum to clear it with threats of destroying the property if its not paid

If yo have a friend coming over, get them to bring it as excess luggage

Otherwise... dont say I didn't warn you

Been there, done it... lost the shipment (they said it was destroyed but Im pretty sure they sold it for a nice little profit) ... got the Tshirt

Default Importing goods - use an agent

On the ship versus air freight question, use air freight unless your goods are extremely heavy. Air freight is processed through offices at the Denpasar airport, while sea freight tends to come in through Surabaya - and there are many bad stories. When you move here to live, there are special arrangements for personal effects - but I guess this doesn't apply to you, so you are just importing goods.
I suggest you used an agent, some have high fees, others are reasonable, so shop around. Talk to them about your plan before you have anything shipped.
This was the main messge from an import/export agent who talked to our Rotary Club last December. Some details of his talk, including slides can be found at
