    Default Doctors and Hospitals

Just for reference as I'm temporarily in Bali, any recomendations for a) good doctors/clinics in South Bali for general GP issues, and b) a good hospital for more serious issues.

I am usually based in Surabaya where mercifully I can go to my local clinic and pay Rp40,000 just like everyone else to see a doctor who's fine for any minor issues, and if I should have a more serious problem I know which are the respected hospitals (SIH, Mitra Keluarga and Siloam - expensive all, but decent, and with no such outrages as "special foreigners' prices")...

My only medical experiences in Bali were a visit to a "clinic" in Kuta on my first ever visit years ago where I was charged almost 1 million to be felt up by a "doctor" and given a bundle of medicines for a dodgy stomach - which were all entirely inappropriate according to a doctor I saw later in Sumbawa (who charged me, if I remember right, Rp50,000, pills included)...
And then, at a local clinic in Candidasa a charming fellow tried to charge a million yet again for briefly pressing his stethoscope to my then girlfriend's stomach and handing over a strip of antibiotics (which I could have bought myself).
"But you have insurance!" he grumbled when I protested...

And I've heard various negative things about BIMC, which are not reassuring given its eye-watering prices.

So, any suggestions for reliable places where Hippocratic oaths actually mean something and where a sick foreigner is not screwed for all he's worth as standard practice?

We are talking about a very critical subject, since there are no doctors or hospital that you can trust in Bali, but for minor issues you can go to a local GP, but must be really MINOR issues.
For more serious one you can go to Sanglah hospital (they have a International Wing) and the price for consultation ONLY is 400.000 and I think if you have a Kitas they will charge 250.000 PLUS medicines and whatever they need to do. Also any other charges for kitas holder will be cheaper.

Also Kasih Ibu gives discount for Kitas holder.

I hope I never have to use any of the one in Bali

I just hate this bullsh** about 3 different prices.

I would like to point out that 400,000 IDR is about $45 - I generally pay more for a decent meal in the US and a whole lot more for decent medical treatment.

If your health aint worth the price of a meal then by all means don't go but If I don't feel well I sure want it to go away - quickly!

I totally agree with lumumba, for me the most complet hospital in Bali is Sanglah Hospital but what I am not sure about is the price you mention on the Wing International!!!!!!!!!!! 400.000 Rp, lumumba are you sure about that price??? because I have been there a few times with my daugther to see a pediatric doctor and we only paid 40.000 Rp, the last time probably it was more than one year ago, but if I am not wrong the consultation was that price, like in a normal consultation around any privee consultant around Denpasar area (although I know the prices has gone up, two weeks ago we paid for the pediatric doctor in denpasar 60.000 Rp).

Kasih ibu dan Puri Bunga (or Puri Bunda????) I hear they are good hospitals as well, although pretty expensive, Mimpimanis has more experiences in these hospitals.
One of the things get me mad in Bali is how doctors love to give so much medication!!!!!!!!!!!!
We went out of the consultation (the last time when Niluhīs fever didnīt go down...) with five or six diferent medications!!!!!!!!!!!!
one for the throat because it was red
    one for the cold
one for the flemas (sorry I donīt know the word in english)
    one for the fever
    one antibiotic
I am not sure if there was as well a medication for the cought!!!
usually I never like to take too many medication, so my comun sense told me that for the throat nothing, for the cold of course nothing........... an antibiotic is already strong enought............ so finally I given Niluh the antibiotic and the medication for the flemas (she had a lots flemas)............ sometimes happen I donīt give all the medication the doctors tell me (my husband did not like this too much but got use!!!)
It happened exactly the same a few years ago when I went to Clinic Mas in Ubud because sore throat, went out with four diferents medications!!!!
But I can say that I am very happy about our pediatric doctor!!!!!!!!!! she is very good!!!
    have a good night!!!

I dont think Kasih Ibu is what Timdog is looking for.

I try not to go to the doctor too much for me but when I do it is usually Kasih Ibu in Kedongan. They charge Rp20,000 for a local for consultation with the general doctor, Rp70,000 for a specialist. For a westerner the prices are Rp500,000 for consulation or Rp250,000 if you are on a KITAS.

My son sees the specialist regularly so I am just thankful that he is Indonesian and gets local prices.

I have tried a couple of the little doctors surgeries locally when I have been sick but they have been more interested in where I am from and how long I have been here than my symptoms and I have been less than impressed with the treatment I have had so tend to go back to Kasih Ibu now.

In Nusa Dua I used to go to Surya Husada and they only charged me local prices but last year whilst my Kitas was being renewed and Kasih Ibu wanted to charge me Rp500,000 I went back there and they have also introduced a 3 tier pricing structure now. However it was a bit cheaper than Kasih Ibu as it cost me about Rp250,000 including the medicines.

Begonia: If they’ve charge you 40.000 they charge you local price. Consultation was/is 400.000

If I feel really sick I will fly to Bandung, good hospitals and only 1 price, or maybe Solo if you need a Orthopedic for consultation/operation.

The extra money you will pay doesn't give you a better doctor/medicines, you'll still get the same sh** If you know what i mean

As lumumba says, "The extra money you will pay doesn't give you a better doctor/medicines, you'll still get the same sh** If you know what i mean", and that is precisely the issue.
I had to see a doctor in Singapore for a nasty case of pink-eye a few months back, and had to pay what worked out as abou US$60, but had I been Singaporean I would have paid just the same, and what was more, I had absolutely no concerns about the professionalism of the doctor.

lumumba, if you're looking for decent hospitals with only one pricing structure closer than either Bandung or JKT, in Surabaya there are the following - Surabaya International Hospital, Siloam and Mitra Kelurga. None are "cheap", but I went with a friend who was seen by a specialist and had an ultrasound at Mitra Keluarga a month or so back. It all cost about 150,000, no matter what your nationality or immigration status.

mimpi, I've noted down Surya Husada, thanks, though quite frankly, purely on principle if nothing else, if I fall off my bike in Bali and break a leg I might well crawl to Ubung and scrape myself onto a bus to Surabaya to have it set! (well, maybe not, but you know what I mean).
The whole business of medical care for foreigners in Bali seems like a thoroughly grubby and reprehensible business, only made worse by the apparent fact that standards and reliability are by no means assured...

Just told by significant other who is (balinese) fairly qualified hospital which specializes in more than the run of the mill illnesses is Surya Husada in Denpaser. Better check the spelling of the second word, am sure Mimpi would know. In Ubud, Ubud Clinic ok for very minor issues. Once I lived in bali for awhile only payed "local" prices. Actually sometimes I payed less than my sister=in-law. Don't know how that happened but it did. Dr. Susela and I were friends though maybe that had someting to do with it. As the ol saying goes, at times it pays..... WHO YOU KNOW that can help in the price department. As far as medicines goes they definitely prescribe to much when one goes; however, the quality is inferior if you don't specify with the name, brand, etc is the most powerful for said condition. Sounds like better to have some medical knowledge to really hit the nail on the head, get to the core of the problem. This is the issue I have incountered numerous times when being treated with psorisis, exzema, severe flu, dislocated elbow and wrist, 20 stitches to eyebrow. The major issues no problem in treating the skin conditions....forget 'bout it. One must know their Western brand for fast, effective, results.
